Undergoing varicose vein treatment is a step towards healthier legs and improved circulation, but it’s important to understand that recovery is a process. Many patients experience common post-treatment symptoms that may feel unusual but are actually a natural part of the healing journey.
At UK Vein Clinic, we believe in keeping our patients informed and supported throughout their recovery. Here’s what you can expect after treatment and how to manage any post-procedure concerns.
One of the most common post-treatment experiences is what we often refer to as “angry veins.” Medically, this is called phlebitis, a temporary inflammatory response that occurs as your treated vein begins to close and heal.
Even though our varicose vein treatments are minimally invasive, they still involve targeting diseased veins. Initially, you might not feel much discomfort. However, around 10 to 14 days after the procedure, the treated vein can become red, tender, and hard to the touch. This is the body’s natural reaction to the vein closing down and being reabsorbed.
If you experience phlebitis, don’t worry—it’s a normal and manageable response from your body during the healing process. Here’s what can help:
✔ Anti-inflammatory medication (as advised by your doctor)
✔ Wearing compression stockings to support circulation
✔ Staying active walking regularly helps reduce inflammation
✔ Applying warm compresses to the affected area for relief
Our aftercare team is always available to offer guidance and reassurance if you have concerns about phlebitis after your procedure.
Another post-treatment occurrence that some patients notice is skin staining, which appears as a faint shadow where the treated vein once was. This happens when red blood cells break down and deposit iron-based pigment, causing the skin to temporarily discolour.
For most patients, skin staining fades within 6 to 12 months as the body continues to heal. However, in a small percentage of cases (particularly in those who tan or pigment easily), mild discoloration may last up to 18 months to 2 years. If you are prone to pigmentation, let us know, and we can adjust aspects of your treatment to minimise this risk for you.
Like any medical procedure, varicose vein treatment has a few rare risks, though they occur in less than 1% of cases. These may include:
· Infection – Easily managed with antibiotics if needed
· Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) – Extremely rare, but we monitor for any signs and guide you on prevention
Rest assured, if you have any concerns post-treatment, our team is here to support you and ensure a smooth recovery.
Healing after varicose vein treatment is a marathon, not as print. While we would love to wave a magic wand and make veins disappear instantly, the reality is that recovery takes a few months. The good news? Most patients can return to work, exercise, and normal activities almost immediately after treatment.
By following aftercare advice, staying patient, and keeping in touch with our team, you’ll see amazing results. Your legs will feel lighter, healthier, and free from the discomfort of varicose veins—making the journey absolutely worth it.
